There is a viral video out for the upcoming Sir Riddles film ‘Prometheus’ which will be an Alien pre-quel. Clearly I have ridiculously high expectations of this film, being a total Alien fanboy. This is a viral video with a difference. It’s a TED talk from Peter Weyland made in 2023. They will still have graphic recording in 2023. It’ll probably be done with a cybernetic implant so you can visualise the stuff onto some huge digital canvas as you hear the words. So I’ve made a graphic recording of the talk. While the technology of 2023 is advanced, there will still be drawing with wobbly black lines!

It’s a pretty dark TED talk from one of the amoral characters that appear to populate the continuity of the Alien films. here it is:

And if you go to Weylandindustries.com and use the tweet button you’ll find this is a video of 2023 posted in 2073. I imagine in 2073 Graphic Recorders will all be cybernetic individuals who draw with bewildering speed and unerring accuracy!!

Both of these chaps provided stirring business advice which could be further augmented by buying their books and joining their clubs. They went a little fast so I developed the ‘speech bubbles around a head’ method.

I made sketchnotes of most of the speakers talks. Having come from a web background I managed to cotton on to most of the tech stuff, but sometimes it escaped me. I was amazed that the audience LOVED the live code demo’s on stage. It was a niche crowd. But a crowd that makes up a community of some of the most interesting web developers around. You can see the sketchotes I made via this page and there are few of the random one off ones below.

Ok I admit it, Addy Osami’s (web twitter) talk was over my head. And I couldn’t ask my JQuery expert friend I was there with as he was paying total attention! I did mangage this:

Eric Ries (website, twitter) took part in a Q&A at Leancamp, and these are my sketchnotes from it. He is an engaging speaker and the hall was packed! He is also the guy who came up with ‘Lean Start Up’ so it’s no surprise. Thiswas at the end of the day and my sketchnotes transformed more into ‘Live illustration’ style headlines.

John Mullins (web) teaches at the London Business School and was talking about his new book ‘Getting to Plan B: Breaking Through to a Better Business Model’. His 30 minute talk at Leacamp was not only very interesting but I enjoyed the fact it was delivered by someone who knows how to capture the attention of a whole, large, room!

There was a lot of info in a 30 minute talk, and a lot of stories and visual metaphors, which helped me! Also I have noticed that in public speaking of this nature it is de rigueur to talk about Steve Jobs as an inspirational figure. It was nice to hear some actual analysis of wat he did for a change. It shows the other side of Jobs, the ruthless business side we forget about after being entranced by a keynote.

I wandered into a random session in the afternoon at Leancamp. It was about how to organise a start-up weekend delivered by Don Ritzen, Co Founder & CEO of Rockstart Accelerator. So I had no idea what a Start Up weekend was when I entered the room. But after sitting in the session I want to go to one!

I attended 4 sessions at Leancamp London 2 where I made sketchnotes. These are the notes from the first one, a talk on Lean startup from Rob Fitzpatrick (website, twitter). It was useful to me as I haven’t read the book yet – don’t tell anyone!

I recommend ‘warming up’ before any kind of drawing, and I hadn’t warmed up at all before Rob’s session. By the time I got onto a second page I was ready to go for the rest of the day!

When I do sketchnotes I often use a medium weight pen in a nice moleskine (I love the Pilot V-Sign). However at Leancamp I decided to experiment by using a chunky Sharpie on bits of Sainsburys Value A4 paper (£2 a ream). I have been reading 37 Signals book Re-Work (which incidentally is an excellent addition to any bathroom bookshelf due to its short chapters). In Re-Work they suggest small pens are too ‘high resolution’ hence my use of a chunky Sharpie.
